Endemage Spring Summer 2018

Spring has made an entrance. I am eagerly awaiting the moment I can replace my parka coat with thick fur hood & knee high suede boots for floral dresses & TOMS Jutti flats. Bring on the sunshine! The best way to celebrate the arrival of Spring is with a dose of Spring/Summer fashion.

Last month the Endemage sisters Lubna and Nadia Al Zakwani released their ready-to-wear Spring Summer 2018 collection. It consists of 15 gowns and takes us on an underwater journey through Oman’s Arabian gulf. The gulf has extensive reefs (mostly rocky but also coral) and mesmerizing aquatic plants. The gowns are decorated with shimmering beads and metallic embroidery reminiscent of the glistening ocean. The motifs show floating marine plants and corals.

The silhouettes are flowing like the undulating waves and include ballooning bell sleeves, layered tiers and asymmetrical draping. Movement and flow refer to the swelling of tides.

The colour palette exists of mint green, white, blush pink, beige, grey and pale yellow. Soft shades, giving the collection a romantic & feminine feel.

The elegant looks pay homage to the modern woman. Contemporary designs with a subtle nod to the sister’s Arabian heritage.

The intricate 3D embroidery adds texture and dimension to the looks. The blush pink and mint green looks stand out! The colours really compliment the designs. The fabrics seem light and flowing yet have a luxurious and effortlessly chic feel. I love that every Endemage collection tells a story related to the country of origin of Lubna and Nadia, which is Oman.

As I write this, outside my window rain starts pouring. What a contrast to the spring mood this collection has given me! Check out the gallery for my favourite looks from this collection, let’s daydream together of sunny spring days!

The 10th edition of India Runway Week (IRW) took place on April 20 – 22, 2018 in Delhi. It was organised by the Indian Federation for Fashion Development (IFFD). Young, talented designers showcased their spring summer 2018 collections during this edition. This year IFFD Directors Avinash & Kiran celebrated the 5th anniversary of India Runway Week with all of those who have supported them in the past years. Pushing IRW to great heights. Both directors are as young as the fresh talent showcasing their designs on the ramp. They’ve created this event to give rookie Indian designers a platform, introducing them to buyers and giving them the support needed to survive in a competitive industry.

It has been a privilege to feature this event over the years, we’ve seen it grow exponentially. Congratulations to all who have been involved!

The IRW designer line-up included both established as new designers. Bibi Russell opened the event, showcasing her fascination with hand-woven fabric. The grand finale showed the collections of 5 different designers from previous seasons including names like Daniel Siyem, Jenjum Gadi, Niharika, Agnimitra Paul and Shravan Kummar. The finale was dedicated to handloom fabrics and Indian heritage.

Bollywood film and TV stars appeared on the ramp as showstoppers including Karishma Tanna, Sana Khan, Ragini Khanna and Nusrat Barucha, creating a buzz.

Check out the gallery for a few highlights from India Runway Week 2018.

HSY Couture: Mohabbat Nama, an ode to Lahore

On April 21st couturier Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, better known as HSY, celebrated 24 years in fashion. For this occasion HSY hosted an exclusive solo show in Lahore, Pakistan. This celebratory collection, titled Mohabbat Nama, is an ode to the designers’ home town Lahore and was presented against a historic backdrop: the Haveli of Wajid Ali Shah, a 250 year old traditional mansion/townhouse. Wajid Ali Shah is a historical figure and King who also had a fondness of poetry, dance, architecture and music. Cause for inspiration for HSY’s collection.

70 models who have played a role in HSY’s career, walked the ramp adorned in couture pieces. Each design named after the model wearing it. As Hassan explains: “Each outfit in this show has been created bespoke, for each model and personality in the show; creating harmony between the fashion and the person who wears it; for at HSY a model is not simply someone who wears what is put on them but rather an architect of her own style and elegance.”

The show included supermodels and film & television actors like Mehreen Syed, Natasha Hussain, Simi Pasha, Abdullah Ejaz, Nael Ahmed and HSY’s long-time collaborator and stylist Shahzad Raza, along with his first ever model, his sister Afshan Samee. Pakistani actress and HSY muse Reema Khan walked the runway as his showstopper.

Grandeur and opulence are among the words that pop into my head when reviewing this collection. Every piece fits like a glove, expressing the wearers personality and style. The colour palette is rich and vibrant, from shades of red, blue and green to soft pink and deep purple. Embellished with heavy, intricate embroidery in gold and silver. This collection is breath-taking and shows the true craftsmanship of HSY and his team.

Browse through my favourite pieces from this collection and be amazed!

Rami Kadi Couture Collection Ometeo

$

Ometeo, a play on Ometeotl. A name used to refer to the pair of Aztec deities Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl. Ometeotl translates to two gods. They were thought of as being simultaneously male and female and represented the creative energy or essence from which the power of all other gods flowed.

Scholars interpret the name Ometeotl as Lord of Duality. This duality forms the basis for Rami Kadi’s fall/winter couture collection. Gender fluid, a dynamic mix of man and woman. This collection challenges expectations. The designs are fierce & loud, heavily influenced by men’s tailoring with textile patterns, checkers, tweed, plaid, flaps, pockets and collars. The bold colours and patterns from Aztec art also play a part in Rami Kadi’s gender show.

Ometeo is a celebration of masculinity and femininity. Men’s tailoring is reimagined and made glamorous. Suit style dominates. Waistcoats become corsets. The edgy cuts of men’s blazers and shirts collide with the smooth cuts of dresses.

Rami’s fascination for technology is also present. The laser cut 3D effect holographic sequins are every photographers dream. With the right light it shows a rainbow coloured reflection. Luxurious and timeless materials go hand in hand with 21st century rebels like aluminium foil, bullet metal and plastic. Intergalactic and psychedelic are the words that come to mind when reviewing this collection.

But it wouldn’t be a Rami Kadi couture collection if it didn’t include a few fairy-tale-like gowns. Amongst all the fierceness and empowerment there is also romance (it’s the feather details and soft shades that give it away).

Rami Kadi delivers yet another innovative collection, showcasing his immaculate craftsmanship, diversity and creativity. This season he is making a statement by playing with modern day trends like gender fluidity.

My favourite look from this collection is the mustard chequered embellished tailored blazer with black and white Swarovski stones, as it perfectly shows off the theme, the masculinity of the blazer, but worn as a dress, expressing femininity.

Take your time reviewing my personal favourites from this collection in the gallery, you will be transfixed by the intricate details!

India Couture Week 2018

The 11th edition of India Couture Week 2018 came to a close Sunday evening with a spectacular show by couturier Rohit Bal. He presented his latest collection ‘’Guldasta’’ (bouquet of florals) which is an ode to the magnificent beauty of flowers.

A total of ten designers showcased their latest haute couture pieces during the 5-day event, located at the Taj Palace and The Imperial in New Delhi. It was organised by the Fashion Design Council of India and kicked off on the 25th of July with a runway show by noted designer Tarun Tahiliani. His bridal wear collection ‘’In Elysium’’ celebrates the modern Indian goddess and pays a homage to classic Indian styles and embroideries. Tarun says he recognizes the struggles of modern day brides. He explains: ”the key has been to achieve lightness, after hearing thousands of women complain about being tortured in clothes they could not move in, or that weighed them down.”

The ICW platform presents the latest bridal couture trends and sets the standard for the industry. Brides-to-be across the nation and beyond take note, while Bollywood stylists mingle with the designers to get their hands on red-carpet gowns for their A-list clientele.

These A-listers were also making appearances on the ICW ramp, as showstoppers included Bollywood actresses Kareena Kapoor Khan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Kangana Ranaut, Kiara Advani, Shilpa Shetty and Yami Gautam.

A MAIDEN'S PRAYER Showcased by Designer Anju Modi at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 A MAIDEN'S PRAYER Showcased by Designer Anju Modi at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

The Victorian era was the source of inspiration for Anju Modi’s “A Maiden’s Prayer”: its art, architecture, classic literature, music and extravagant fashion styles. The colour combinations are stunning!

Amit Aggarwal at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 worn by Shilpa Shetty Amit Aggarwal at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Amit Aggarwal was inspired by two natural phenomena for his collection ‘’Crystalis’’ (a derivation of the words crystal and chrysalis): the formation of crystals at a molecular level and the enveloping of the metallic chrysalis around a butterfly cocoon. Amit is known to incorporate sustainable materials into his innovative designs. Giving an extra dimension to his work.

Naintara by Suneet Varma at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 Naintara by Suneet Varma at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Suneet Varma’s couture collection “Naintara” is a theatrical representation of the modern Indian woman who lives in the now – yet embraces the romance of traditional Indian couture. Suneet’s pieces express sensuality and seduction. The mirror work on these gowns is exquisite!

Falguni and Shane Peacock at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 worn by Kareena Kapoor Falguni and Shane Peacock at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Falguni Shane Peacock unveiled their collection ‘’Amour De Junagarh’’. A story of a Parisian queen visiting the grand palace of Junagarh – Rajasthan’s cultural jewel. It is a breath taking collection that oozes glamour. Showstopper Kareena Kapoor wore a gold lehenga with feather details and silver embellishments.

SHYAMAL & BHUMIKA launch ‘Muse of Mirrors’ at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 with ‘Kiara Advani’ ‘Nostalgia’ by Pallavi Jaikishan at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Shyamal & Bhumika’s ‘’Muse of Mirrors’’ is inspired by the regality and romance of ancient palaces, with their ornate archways, painted ceilings, silk upholstery and baroque carpets. Muse Kiara Advani appeared onto the ramp in a beautiful green ensemble like a fairy-tale princess.

Pallavi Jaikishan debuted in the Indian fashion industry in the early 1970’s. For her ICW collection the veteran designer wanted to revisit and modify her old classics to a collection that resonates with the woman of today. Vintage glamour!

Rahul Mishra Couture at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Rahul Mishra’s collection ‘’Maraasim’’ focuses on relationships and balance. The co-existence of nature and architecture, the balance between traditional and modern. Rahul was also inspired by art of the Mughal era. The intricate embroidery takes us on a journey.

Once Upon A Dream by Designer Reynu Taandon at FDCI India Couture Week 2018 worn by Yami Gautam Once Upon A Dream by Designer Reynu Taandon at FDCI India Couture Week 2018

Just like Rohit Bal, Reynu Taandon was inspired by florals for her collection ‘’One upon a dream’’. It is a beautiful blend of pastel tones & whimsical flora.

This edition of India Couture Week 2018 tells us that the modern-day bride has a mind of her own, isn’t afraid to break with tradition, embraces contemporary trends, but also honours her roots and heritage. Trends include a diverse colour palette, with preference to softer shades and pastels. Modern and traditional go hand in hand. The neo-bride loves luxury and red-carpet glamour!

Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018

Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018 took place from the 22nd until the 26th of August at The St. Regis, Mumbai. The 38th season was all about pushing boudaries as it focused on themes like sustainability, innovation and inclusivity. 50 or so designers showcased the latest fashion, style & beauty trends.

The grand finale by designer Monisha Jaising was a great spectacle including Cirque du Soleil artists. Who better to walk the ramp for Monisha’s collection Shades of a Diva, than the Bollywood diva herself Kareena Kapoor Khan. She looked like a goddess, draped in a holographic fabric, ancient Greek style.

The rise of a new generation – Budding actress Janhvi Kapoor, daughter of the late actress Sridevi and film producer Boney Kapoor, made her Lakmé Fashion Week debut in a design by Nachiket Barve from his collection Millenial Maharanis. Officially Janhvi represents Generation Z, but both generations are, as Rita Ora sings it, HOT RIGHT NOW. The media says that this generation values sustainability, is extremely tech-savvy and is seen as culturally diverse, tolerant and accepting.

This perfectly describes the theme of this edition, as it showed us fashion is for everyone: regular or plus size, LGBT, no matter the gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, age etc. Everyone has a chance to shine and express themselves.

One Lakmé Fashion Week tradition that is here to stay is the appearance of the Bollywood showstopper. This year it seemed nearly every designer had a showstopper from the film industry to showcase their final piece. I must admit, it is great marketing/PR. It is like Anna Wintour’s controversial decision years back to put celebrities on the Vogue magazine cover instead of high fashion models. It was a decision that had to be made for the sake of the magazine’s future. The new generations want to see their idols in the hottest fashion pieces. They are todays trendsetters alongside the influencers.

I do however feel India has a large amount of topmodels that also deserve to be the center of attention, which is why my favorites picks from Lakmé Fashion Week don’t JUST include the celebrity showstoppers.

PFDC L’Oréal Paris Bridal Week 2018

The 8th edition of PFDC L’Oréal Paris Bridal Week 2018 (PLBW) took place from the 4th to the 6th of September at the Nishat Banquets in Lahore. The event was organized by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) in collaboration with its title sponsor L’Oréal Paris. 24 designers showcased their bridal collections, presenting the trends for the upcoming bridal season. The shows featured both traditional designs as contemporary looks.

The runway models looked flawless wearing makeup by L’Oréal Paris, their hair perfectly coiffed with the brands’ hair products. The brand is not just about calling the trends in beauty, but also about bringing sustainability, diversity and inclusiveness to the realm of beauty. An admirable initiative. L’Oréal sets a good example which more brands should follow.

The 8th edition kicked off with a runway show by noted designer Nomi Ansari. Known for his creative use of colour, Nomi once again featured vivid shades, breathing life into his designs. It is one of my favourite collections from this PLBW season. The appearance of actress Maya Ali from the blockbuster film ‘Teefa in Trouble’ (opposite Ali Zafar) was the cherry on top of the cake. She looked mesmerizing in a turquoise shade.

Another highlight was a design by The House of Kamiar Rokni from their collection ‘Moonrise’ (the moon as a symbol of femininity). A stunning pearl white lehenga with gold embellishments. A look respecting tradition but made for the woman of today.

The grand finale of PLBW was by design royalty HSY. He paid tribute to the powerful, modern woman of today; the new, the fearless and dynamic generation. The collection also celebrated the beauty of diversity in all women. Which is in-line with L’Oréal’s vision. A very filmi trend that brides have picked up on is wearing sunglasses with bridal outfits. HSY played on this trend, with models wearing colourful shades to match their bridal gowns. A fun and rebellious look!

The gallery features my favourite looks from PLBW. Pictures were shot by the wonderful Faisal Farooqui and his team at Dragonfly.

Last September the Supreme Court of India decriminalized section 377 (Indian Penal Code) regarding homosexuality. The section came into force in 1861. 157 years later homosexuality finally receives legal approval and recognition. The Indian LGBTQ community and its supporters took to the streets to celebrate this great victory.

The Spring Summer 2019 edition of Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week (LMIFW) took place from October 10-13 in New Delhi. The event organised by The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) closed on the 13th of October with a unique grand finale. What better way to celebrate last months’ #377 victory than with a spectacular ‘Rainbow’ fashion show! 40 designers from accross the country paid tribute. Models walked the LMIFW runway in bold designs, looking fierce and fearless.

Fashion is a statement, a form of self-expression. In India the runway shows have become a platform for artists to express their views, whether it is the message of sustainability, women’s empowerment, honoring traditional craftsmanship and/or inclusivity. Just like the film industry has its role in discussing societal matters, fashion is also breaking boundaries. It is refreshing!

Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2019

Lakmé Fashion Week Summer Resort 2019 took place from January 30th to February 3rd, 2019 at Jio Garden BKC in Mumbai, India. More than 50 designers graced the stage during the 5-day extravaganza, presenting their vision for the summer season. The fashion platform not only promotes innovation, sustainability and trendsetting fashion, it also launches the latest beauty trends. This season’s Lakmé theme Matte Reinvent is all about being bold, intensely matte and comfortably glamourous.

The opening ceremony on the 30th of January, held at The Royal Opera House, showcased the work of Gaurav Gupta. His collection ‘The (Un)folding’ brought together the delicacy of handwoven fabrics with the sharpness of the designer’s signature gravity-defying patternmaking. It also highlights Gupta’s love for origami folding and fluid-structural construction. Bollywood actress Tabu walked the ramp as showstopper, in a stunning grey/blue gown with sparkly embellishments and 3D appliqué floral details.

My highlights are the resort wear shows by Anjali Patel Mehta (Verandah), Rajdeep Ranawat and Shivan & Narresh. Anjali Patel Mehta is an expert in resort and holiday wear. Her collection ‘Jahanara’ was inspired by the life of the beautiful Mughal princess Jahanara Begum. The blue gown with bold print featured in the gallery is a wardrobe must-have.

Rajdeep Ranawat was inspired by Istanbul: its flowers, the waters of the grand Bosporus and the opulence of the Ottoman Empire. He showcased summer proof styles with bold, eye catching patterns.

Shivan & Narresh Patu Series brought two tribal art forms together: elements of Bengal’s Pattachitra art and the Tholu Bommalata leather puppetry of Andhra Pradesh. The designer duo created pieces to match the bold, confident and sophisticated lifestyle of millennials.

My favourite moment of this seasons Lakmé Fashion Week was when Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, star of the successful film Manikarnika, took the stage for designer Anushree Reddy wearing a dazzling lehenga with crystal encrusted choli.

On february 3rd designers Shantanu & Nikhil presented their collection Recruit SS’19 during their first ever Lakmé Fashion Week – Ultimate Finale. They took the audience on an empowering journey, highlighting the emancipation of the millennial Indian woman. Edgy silhouettes in black, gold and scarlet red stood out. We saw exaggerated drapes, dramatic mesh overlays, oversized capes accessorized with medallion adornments, silk tassels and intricate gold embroidery. What a show!

Lakmé brand ambassador Kareena Kapoor Khan walked the ramp as showstopper in a sleek black gown sporting a bold red lip, the make-up brands’ newest lipstick Lakmé Absolute Matte Ultimate Lip Colours with Argan Oil.

Oriental Fashion Show Paris 2019

The 29th edition of the Oriental Fashion Show was held on January 22nd and 23rd at the Peninsula hotel during Paris Haute Couture Week. 12 designers from eleven different countries showcased their spring summer 2019 collections during the event. The show, organised by director Hind Joudar, promotes designers who are inspired by their oriental heritage. It showcases the finest haute couture designs from the East: from traditional kaftans, glamorous evening wear to red carpet showstoppers and spectacular bridal gowns. A fashion extravaganza!

Lebanese designer Abed Mahfouz is known for his signature ‘Mahfouz style’, his fashion forward designs are for graceful, sophisticated women. His bridal couture gowns are breath taking!

Raishma from Pakistan draws inspiration from her oriental origins. Raishma has been dressing royalty and Hollywood actresses for over 20 years. Hand-embroidered details make her gowns stand out. Her pieces evoke sensations of movement and fluidity.

Designer Saher Okal from Palestine collaborated with the Humanity Crew for his collection ‘Lines of Life’. The Humanity Crew gives support to refugees by giving them the opportunity to participate in art and fashion projects. Saher Okal was inspired by sketches made by refugees based in Athens.

Designer Nabil Younes from Libya wants women to look comfortable and elegant at the same time. I adore his use of transparent lace and delicate embroidery for this collection.

Through his collections, Hany El Behairy tells the story of Egypt and its magnificence. His pieces celebrate the female form. Each piece showcases true craftsmanship. This collection has a bit of a twenties, Gatsby feel to it, with fringe, feathers and glamorous embellishments.

Bouchra Filali from Morocco is faithful to the principles and foundations of the traditional Moroccan dress. Her kaftans are little works of art, decorated with fine embroidery and luxurious embellishments.

Karim Kadid from Algeria is famous for his traditional embroideries and innovative cuts. This emerald green kaftan gown with gold embroidery and velvet fabric is divine!

Mouna Benbrahim from Tunisia created Atmosphere Haute Couture in 2006. Mouna is known for her ‘revisited traditional’ style, mixing traditional Tunisian elements with contemporary silhouettes. This collection looks very regal: crowns with floral ornaments and heavily embellished ensembles in bold & bright colors.

Interview with Nikita from The Naked Laundry: Fashion is my second skin

Naturally Nked blogger Nikita Ladwa recently launched her fashion brand The Naked Laundry. A collection of crop tops aimed at both the Western and Indian market, inspired by pure, subtle, muted tones. Nikita tells us more about her fashion journey and how she went from being a quiet Business Management student to a budding fashion entrepreneur.

Tell us more about yourself, what is your background?

Funnily enough, my background is definitely not a straight line. I graduated with a Business Management and Economic degree, and whilst I enjoyed every second, I knew I had this burst of energy, flare and quite seemingly creativeness wanting to come out which wouldn’t be suited for the corporate world.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m on two sides of the spectrum. You’ll either see me wearing quite a lot of earthy nude tones weeks on weeks and then you’ll see a range of spring pastel bolds. A classic in my wardrobe is definitely my midi skirts and satin dresses- comfy yet elegant.

I knew I had this burst of energy, flare and quite seemingly creativeness wanting to come out which wouldn’t be suited for the corporate world

What is your favourite piece of clothing and why?

I am a hoarder for dresses, as we established midis in particularly. I don’t have a favourite as such as it changes all the time depending on my mood, but one thing that does make to my favourite list is it must factor in versatility. Buying a garment that simply takes you from day to evening, or that can be worn in many other outfits is very important to me.

You are based in London, what is the fashion scene like?

London is just London. It definitely lives up to its name, but not only because of the flamboyant fashion scene but the inspiration a simple stroll can cause. London is definitely welcoming to whichever trend you set or follow, and it certainly allows you to develop your own flare.

When did you start with your blog Naturally Nked?

I started blogging in my final year of my degree. I knew the minute that I was going to graduate, I would do everything I could to make the fashion industry accept me despite my corporate background. I set up Naturally Nked almost like a C.V to get my foot through to the door, as well as build a network with like-minded people and just grow as a person! Believe it or not, I was actually quite quiet in my Economic class, and I urged a way to have a voice and this was it.

What is the idea behind the name Naturally Nked?

The name originates to something I am a huge believer in, being naked! Not in the standard term as we all know it, but as one being just pure! Naturally Nked promotes minimalist, where in the world of beauty and fashion, you can still look bold by complimenting your body and skin, naturally.

You’ve been able to work with quite a lot of known brands like Bobbi Brown and Ted Baker; could you tell us a bit more about these collaborations?

In all honesty, I have constantly been pitching myself to brands since the very first day I’d started blogging. Some days, my pitching might not convince them, but others will. It is really all about finding the right kind of brands who sit well with your morals and are able to build an organic relationship.

Buying a garment that simply takes you from day to evening, or that can be worn in many other outfits is very important to me

You’ve recently launched The Naked Laundry; could you tell us more about this brand?

The Naked Laundry was built and designed for the ‘modern’ Asian women who want to be experimental with their taste in style. The idea came about when I was extremely frustrated when none of my blouses for my sari’s fitted me. Often, blouses are made from the end part of a sari, and whilst as women we naturally grow up and down, these blouses are not designed for comfort. I decided to start wearing crop tops and mixing my western wear wardrobe with my Indian wear as I am a strong believer of comfort! I also wanted to showcase crop tops as an essential styling piece that can be worn in numerous amount of ways as well as encourage to keep your wardrobe limited!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from a feeling. Often when I purchase other clothing, I always wish something was different; therefore I draw my ideas from that moment and draft it as soon as I have the next chance. I also love seeing what the latest catwalks are showing, and how I could incorporate the feminine and classic elements into my brand.

Your passion will drive you everywhere! It’s no longer about how hard you work; it’s about how smart you work

Could you tell us more about any upcoming projects you are working on?

Not much can be said yet as we are always working on something super exciting, however we are broadening our color ranges in spear it towards summer and featuring plenty of satin with lace!

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion bloggers/designers?

Very cheesy I know, but your passion will drive you everywhere! It’s no longer about how hard you work; it’s about how smart you work. Having a full time job, blogging and my own business tires me out very quickly, but all these things is what makes me thrive to work harder, it gets my adrenaline pumping! It took me three years to work on my business plan, therefore do not rush anything and do plenty of research, even if it simply means messaging someone who you look up to and arranging a short coffee date.

Jamina Lahssini: A Modern Interpretation of the Moroccan Caftan

Dutch Moroccan designer Jamina Lahssini was born in a small town called Oudenbosch located in the North of Brabant, The Netherlands. Her family introduced her to the world of fashion, it was love at first stitch. Jamina started working on her mother’s designs: tailoring, sewing & pattern making. She decided to pursue her dream by studying fashion design and soon after graduating she opened her own caftan business in The Netherlands. In 2018 she launched her own fashion label, releasing both ready-to-wear as haute couture collections.

Modern interpretation of the caftan
Jamina reinvents the classic caftan. A fusion between traditional Moroccan caftan styles and contemporary elements. Designs that perfectly fit the wishes & needs of a modern and independent woman. The ready-to-wear collections are tailored to women with a love for the traditional caftan silhouette, yet prefer a more minimalist style focused on comfort and modernity. The haute couture line includes custom pieces for women with their own unique character and style. They want a touch of class and elegance.

Moroccan craftsmanship
Inspired by her travels abroad, Jamina’s designs are all about the perfect fit and enhancement of the female silhouette. The couture pieces are hand made using traditional sewing techniques. They are brought to life with delicate appliques, beaded motifs, crystals and floral embroideries. Jamina experiments with different fabrics, adding lace and leather elements to the luxurious textiles. A fashion forward approach.

Le Cuir Noir Collection was Jamina’s first couture collection for which she was inspired by the centuries-old Medina Fes El Bali, the oldest walled part of Fez – Morocco, where the tanneries have been processing leather for centuries. Jamina wanted to honour the leather craftsmanship of Fez by implementing leather fabrics into the caftan designs. She also celebrates the versatility of the caftan. A velour caftan with peacock beaded motif and feathers really stands out.

Her second collection The Voyage of Venus came to life after looking through some pictures of Thalita Getty, a Dutch icon that inspired many in the 1960’s with her iconic Moroccan fashion looks. The blue leather caftan was inspired by the blue ocean and the city of Tangier. It tells the story of migration and how it had impact on the Moroccan fashion scene. Resulting in the evolution of the caftan.

Internationally acclaimed fashion designer Rahul Mishra showcased a celebratory collection at the autumn/winter 2019 edition of Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week (LMIFW), during which he looked back on his decade-long journey in fashion.

The metamorphosis of the Artist from the Physicist.

Unlike other designers, Rahul discovered his love for design at a later stage in life. Growing up in the sleepy village of Malhausi in the North of India, Rahul was set to become a Physicist after he earned his degree from Kanpur University. A turning point in his career was when he signed up for a postgraduate degree at a design school in Ahmedabad. Here he found his true calling.

He made his national runway debut in 2006 and in 2008 Rahul launched his own label in Mumbai. His international career took off after winning the International Woolmark Prize in 2014, a competition for emerging design talent. A great honour, as he was the first Indian to win this prestigious award. In 2015 Mishra made his grand debut at Paris Fashion Week, where he is now a regular on the fashion calendar.

Mishra combines age old-crafts with contemporary style. He collaborates with skilled craftsmen and artisans from different Indian regions to make his designs come to life. Mishra beliefs in fashion that serves a greater cause. Which is the reason why he is making a statement when it comes to sustainability. A few years ago the Physicist turned artist also metamorphosed into a father. With his daughter he spends a lot of time exploring nature, a great source of inspiration.

10 Years of Rahul Mishra: Retrospection. Metamorphosis. Reinvention.

Many of the looks from the celebratory collection have never been showcased in India. They are pieces from different Paris Fashion Week collections. Rahul about the collection:

‘’The idea is to combine Eastern mysticism with Western meticulousness and highlight the overlap; so as to demonstrate that the world shares common ideas of timeless intricacy and elegance in fashion.’’

This collection also paid a tribute to embroideries. It’s an interplay between architectural silhouettes, vibrant colours as well as prints and motifs inspired by the beauty of nature.

From what I see, Dutch artists also hold a special place in Mishra’s heart. He has used their work as inspiration more than once, from the visual illusions from M.C. Escher to the sunflowers of van Gogh.

Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2019

Lakmé Fashion Week’s Winter Festive edition took place from the 21st until the 25th of August in Mumbai, India. Couturier to the (Bollywood) stars Manish Malhotra presented his collection ‘MAAHRUMYSHA’ during the opening night. The collection encompasses the designers love for fabrics. The show was divided into three sections, silk in jewel tones, wool from Kashmir and cotton in pastel. Actress and showstopper Katrina Kaif looked the part, wearing a velvet lehenga with revealing top, showing off her fit physique.

Sustainability

The five day event included a sustainable fashion day, emphasizing the urgency of sustainability across all industries. The fashion industry is one of the major polluting industries in the world. Time to take action. Designer Amit Aggarwal showcased a collection made from new-age sustainable synthetics, using recycled PET bottles. Amit shows us sustainable fashion can be glamorous and continues to set the sustainability standard for fellow designers.

Diversity

Diversity, Inclusion, Equity. The fashion industry finally understands the importance of diversity. Women (and men) come in all shapes, sizes and colours. It is great to see more diversity on the Lakmé Fashion Week runway this edition. I do feel, they should follow the lead of fashion designer Sabyasachi who recently launched his winter bridal campaign not only including women of all shapes and sizes, but also featuring models with a darker skin tone. The obsession with fairer skin should end. If we truly want to celebrate diversity, this topic should be addressed. Everyone should take notes from Rihanna´s Savage X Fenty runway show, let her give you a masterclass in diversity. Victoria’s Secret eat your heart out!

Celebrity showstoppers

The Lakmé Absolute Grand Finale featured designer duo Gauri & Nainika. Their collection reflected power dressing of the 80s to the golden era. Styles which are fun, free and light with sharp detailing, dramatic and fluid silhouettes, vintage botanical illustrations and intricate hand embroideries. Showstopper Kareena Kapoor Khan, the Lakmé Brand Ambassador, looked stunning in a black evening gown. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the celebrity showstoppers featured during Lakmé, but somehow this season I prefer the outfits worn by the models to those worn by Bollywood’s beauties.

In the gallery I’ve featured 20 of my favourite looks from this edition. Let us know your top picks!

OFS is the brainchild of Hind Joudar, who has been leading this event for the past 15 years. I praise her for introducing Western audiences to the beauty of Oriental fashion. The designs showcased on the OFS ramp tell us stories of different cultures, rich heritage and traditional craftsmanship. A feast for the eyes!

The shows in Paris and London featured both contemporary looks as traditional pieces, from glamorous evening gowns to extravagant kaftans beautifully adorned with intricate hand-stitched embroidery, stones and jewels. OFS celebrated diversity like no other, the models chosen to walk the runway come from different cultural backgrounds and gave an extra dimension to the designs.

Couture Bridal Gowns: Trends from the India Couture Week Runway

The 12th edition of India Couture Week took place from the 22nd until the 28th of July 2019 at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, India. Yes, I know this was three months ago, but I had a great excuse to take some time off: my own wedding! No big fat Indian wedding for me though, a small intimate affair at a luxurious location is more my style. Just like Bollywood brides Neha Dupia, Anushka Sharma and Mira Rajput Kapoor, I chose to wear a pink lehenga during the wedding ceremony. Traditional red, although still very beautiful, isn’t as popular as it used to be in the past. On the India Couture Week runway we saw a lot of neutral shades, pastels and a lot of silver. The silver, shimmery gowns are very futuristic, modern silhouettes with a hint of tradition. According to Vogue India, even though we see a lot of changes in bridal fashion, away from traditional shades and styles, we still hold on to traditional elements which celebrate the rich heritage of Indian fashion. The collections of Amit Aggarwal, Reynu Taandon, Pankaj & Nidhi, Gaurav Gupta and Falguni & Shane Peacock include several looks for the fashion forward neo-bride. Designer Anamika Khanna once described the neo-bride in Vogue India magazine as: ‘eclectic, she respects Indian crafts and heritage, but has a distinctive style that is modern’.

Designers like Tarun Tahiliani, Rahul Mishra, Suneet Varma, Sulakshana Monga and Shyamal & Bhumika presented designs more suitable for the classic bride. They remind us traditional shades of red are still here to stay and showcase the intricacy of Indian craftsmanship. Floral motifs are also a timeless trend, just as intricate embroideries and eye-catching embellishments.
